Tribute to Ian Kershaw, Former CEO of Northern Education Trust

Northern Education Trust is deeply saddened by the passing of Ian Kershaw, who served as Chief Executive Officer of the Trust from 2014 to 2017. Ian was a highly respected figure in education, bringing extensive experience, leadership and integrity to every role he undertook throughout his career.

Over many years, Ian held a wide range of senior positions across the education sector. His career included leadership as an executive headteacher within a residential special school, serving as a secondary school principal, and guiding the work of an Education Action Zone. Nationally, he was widely recognised for his role as Independent Chief Adviser during the Birmingham ‘Trojan Horse’ investigation, a responsibility that reflected the trust placed in his judgement and expertise.

Ian also contributed significantly through his work as Managing Director of Northern Education Associates and as a National Challenge Adviser for the Department for Education. Even after stepping back from full-time employment in 2022, he remained committed to education, continuing to give his time and insight as a trustee and board member.

Above all, Ian was driven by a deep commitment to improving the lives and opportunities of children and young people. Those who worked alongside him at Northern Education Trust remember him not only for his professionalism and dedication, but also for his generosity, warmth and genuine care for others. He was known for offering guidance, encouragement and personal support to colleagues, always taking time to listen.

Ian often spoke with great pride about his family, who meant so much to him. He leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion and leadership, and will be remembered with great affection and respect by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be greatly missed.
